About SimonMed® Imaging

As the largest outpatient physician radiology group in the country,  SimonMed® Imaging covers 11 states with 160 accredited facilities. The more than 200 subspeciality-trained physicians focus on utilizing the latest technology to provide the highest quality diagnostic services and care to referring physicians and patients.

The Problem

SimonMed had acquired several radiology practices within their existing markets. These new practices utilized different, antiquated PACS systems with limited capability and connectivity. Concurrently,  SimonMed was in the process of deploying a new PACS and VNA architecture to support its entire network of existing and new practices. The team needed an immediate archiving solution in all new sites to secure and stabilize studies and information. Additionally, all new sites needed immediate workflow integration in routing and prefetching to ensure seamless diagnostic operations across their business during the network upgrade.

The Solution

Leveraging the Silverback® Workflow & Migration Engine, the team delivered a solution to support both tactical and strategic plans for SimonMed’s growing network. The team immediately deployed Silverback® in both a physical and virtual configuration throughout the network to:

  • Reduce bandwidth constraints by deploying a physical server at each new site.
  • Immediately migrate studies from old systems to integrate them into business operations.
  • Efficiently C-Find, Index, and Parse site studies for legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Configure Silverback®  archiving and routing features to support ongoing diagnostic operations.
  • Quickly create prefetch workflows to integrate new sites with existing networks and operations.
  • Leverage UI and reporting tools to alert and analyze study activity across the entire SimonMed® network.

“We had multiple requirements to address in our network. We needed the right technology solution and a trusted partner. The Silverback® platform and the DatFirst team provided us the flexibility and expertise to meet the challenges  and complexities of our growing business.”

Erik Sober – IT Director

Looking Forward

As SimonMed® continues to expand its network and business operations, the Silverback® platform provides the intelligence and flexibility to enable new custom workflows and efficiencies. With powerful and dynamic tools,  the organization is well-positioned to build out services ranging from high availability, anonymization, and AI orchestration. The DataFirst team is a premier partner for today and tomorrow.

About Everlight Radiology

Since 2006, Everlight Radiology has provided 24/7 reporting expertise and leadership across the globe. With over 600 radiologists, the firm serves hospitals and clinics with specialty, urgent after hours, routine reading, and reporting services. Everlight deploys the most advanced technology and ensures coverage of all time zones with offices and consultants in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, America, and Europe.

The Problem

Due to significant business growth, Everlight needed to ensure that increased study volumes across its network would not create bottlenecks and inefficiency. Without an intelligent DICOM workflow engine, high study volumes had the potential to be unbalanced across mod servers, overwhelming some while leaving others idle and underutilized. To complicate a potential solution, the Everlight architecture consisted of both on-prem and cloud infrastructure to support their global operations.

As Everlight began to scope current and future requirements, the team quickly realized there was no existing solution in the market to meet their immediate needs and scale with flexibility to the demands of a growing organization. Everlight needed a robust platform with an experienced partner to execute an aggressive strategy built on innovation, service, and reading expertise.

The Solution

To meet their objectives, Everlight needed two things: a dynamic platform and a premier partner.

The Selection

The first step involved identifying and selecting a partner with deep experience and cutting-edge technology.  After narrowing the potential vendor list, Everlight invited candidates to demonstrate their solutions and participate in a detailed Q&A session. While entering this process as a distant number three in vendor ranking, DataFirst quickly emerged as the clear leader. After interactive discussions involving architecture, connectivity, integration, and development, the team identified DataFirst as the only partner who could immediately deploy a customized solution, provide an extensible platform for future growth, and deliver 24/7 support to this growing enterprise.

“Your team was so responsive and attentive to details. Vendors always talk about this, but never deliver. This is a true partnership!”

Linda Gracie – Everlight Project Manager

The Deployment

In less than five weeks, DataFirst created key features and deployed them for test and evaluation in the Everlight network. Specifically, the DataFirst team deployed the Silverback® solution to;

  • Create and track new SOP, study, series, and instance level UID’s for inbound DICOM so images could later be added and sent directly to the same node.
  • Load balance to study and series level identification.
  • Deploy HA for sufficient fault/outage tolerance across the entire network.
  • Accept and route studies with AE or IP mismatch.
  • Export DICOM objects to S3 in a configurable manner.
  • For Target Failures: ID and minimize the risk of data loss due to;
    • Data slowness
    • Data loss

The DataFirst team leveraged the unique ‘plug-in’ architecture of the Silverback® platform to create and deploy several unique workflows. This flexibility and speed ensured Everlight could quickly deploy API calls with their RESTful services and route to Silverback® for notifications and alerts throughout the network.

Looking Forward

The Silverback® platform is designed to strategically meet the future needs of any organization. As Everlight expands through an aggressive strategy of innovation and service, the platform will provide the foundation to scale and adapt to support new workflows. Designed for intelligence, the Silverback® platform is the solution to support any imaging enterprise today and tomorrow.

About Inova Health System

As Northern Virginia’s largest non-profit healthcare provider, Inova Health System’s 20,000 team members service more than two million patient visits annually. The INOVA care network comprises 7 hospitals, as well as numerous specialty and urgent care clinics.

The Problem

Inova Health System needed an intelligent study distribution solution to support and enable the full functionality of their new PACS system. The team requested a dynamic router to address the complexity of connecting legacy source systems and ensuring seamless workflow in 7 hospitals, an independent Imaging Center, and a centralized data center. Writing individual scripts to code countless workflow requirements was not an option for a project of this scale. In scoping the solution, the IT team encountered significant syntax issues preventing PACS ingestion from existing sources. Incomplete and non-standard DICOM data prevented clean Transfer Syntax negotiation resulting in incomplete, missing and dirty data at the destination for multiple SOP Classes.

The Solution

With the Silverback® Workflow Engine positioned between the modalities and target PACS and VNA, Inova now has a centralized, intelligent workflow engine to monitor and configure their imaging network at any time from any place. Leveraging intelligent and customizable tools within the platform, the team:

  • Set customized logic profiles for image distribution to cloud PACS and data center based VNA.
  • Configured HA within the central data center to support on-premise operations and mitigate bandwidth issues.
  • Set custom alerts and reports to track network performance.
  • Configured storage at each hospital to account for different workflows and volumes.
  • Set compression protocols by modality to ensure optimized network resources in transmission.
  • Customized a central dashboard to view and analyze all sites and systems from modality to the cloud.

With the DataFirst dedicated project team, the entire initiative was scoped, configured, installed, tested, and put into production in less than two months.

“With Silverback®, we now have a dynamic solution to manage and monitor study distribution throughout our imaging network.  From design to deployment, the DataFirst team provided us with the expertise and support to achieve all our objectives and timelines.”

Lonnie Jano – Senior Systems Analyst, INOVA Health Systems

Looking Ahead

Beyond customized image distribution and failover capabilities, the IT team can leverage this dynamic asset for clinical efficiencies in prefetch, Q/C and short-term or long-term archiving. Strategically, the platform contains the industry-leading migration engine to support future acquisitions and infrastructure upgrade initiatives. Designed for intelligence and scale, the Silverback® platform is the solution to support any imaging enterprise today and tomorrow.
